In joint statements, Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani and Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel confirmed today, Wednesday, March 22, 2023, the directives of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani to invest in gas fields and sustain their momentum.

The Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, said during a press conference with the Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, during their visit to the Halfaya field in Maysan, that “there is an intensive and focused follow-up by the Prime Minister on the need to invest in gas fields in Iraq, and to meet the needs of power stations.” According to what was reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Speaking about the visit to the Halfaya field, Abdul-Ghani explained that it comes to find out about the developmental stages of extraction and gas fields in Iraq.

He added that his ministry’s meetings with the Ministry of Electricity are continuing, explaining that, during a joint meeting, it was agreed to guarantee the release of gas that would meet the needs of the Maysan gas and investment station.

Qualitative steps at Maysan station

For his part, Iraqi Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel said during the joint conference: “Our intention with the Ministry of Oil is to work as a unified team according to the Prime Minister’s directives, each according to his obligations.”

Completion of two power stations in Halfaya field

Earlier today, the Ministry of Oil set the objectives of the visit of its Minister, Hayan Abdel-Ghani, accompanied by the Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, to the Halfaya field in Maysan, while indicating the near completion of two power stations with gas invested from the field.

The ministry’s spokesman, Assem Jihad, said, “The most important goals of the visit of the Ministers of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, and Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, is the field follow-up of the associated gas investment projects in the Halfaya field in Maysan.”

He explained that “this field is one of the largest oil fields in the province.” According to his statements to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

He added, “There is a plan to invest the gas associated with oil operations with a capacity of 300 million standard cubic feet,” noting that “the Maysan Oil Company, in cooperation with Petrojana, has achieved important steps to reach this goal.”

Jihad said, “The visit aims to follow up the projects of supplying the governorate’s two electric power stations, as the Maysan Oil Company will supply the two stations with quantities of gas amounting to 160 billion standard cubic feet per day, and this achieves the objectives of the Ministry of Electricity in this regard.”

He continued, “The other goal of the visit is to follow up the oil production in this field, which now amounts to 350,000 barrels per day,” explaining that “the ministry is seeking to raise production to 400,000 barrels per day of crude oil.”

He stressed that “the Halfaya field development project is one of the successful projects that have achieved its objectives.”

A new unit enters production

On the other hand, the Undersecretary of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil for Refining Affairs, Hamid Younes, said that the national effort in the North Refineries Company and the supporting parties from the national companies managed to rebuild the Al-Azmara unit in the Salah Al-Din / 2 refinery in Baiji with a capacity of 20 thousand barrels per day, stressing that Trial production will begin in early May.
