COP28 climate summit chief calls for halting methane emissions by 2030

The appointed president of the COP28 climate summit, Sultan Al-Jaber, stressed the need for all parties and sectors to cooperate in order to find realistic solutions to decarbonize and reduce emissions and achieve tangible progress in facing the repercussions of climate change.

This came during a roundtable meeting for CEOs on carbon removal, as part of the UAE Climate Technology Forum, with the participation of a number of senior leaders of the oil and gas sector, emissions-intensive industries, technology companies and financial institutions.

The President of the Climate Summit COP 28 called on the attendees to support pathways to reduce emissions in other sectors, and to apply frameworks that have proven their worth in following up and measuring reductions, calling on the oil and gas sector to work jointly with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and reducing methane emissions to nearly zero. by 2030.

emissions reduction plans

Sultan Al Jaber said: “According to the UAE’s vision, the COP28 Climate Summit focuses on benefiting from the concerted efforts of all stakeholders for the success of climate action,” explaining that the first step will be the transition to a low-carbon economy, then zero emissions, in conjunction with ensuring sustainable economic and social growth. .

He added, “We have to develop a new vision of the relationship between energy producers and consumers in the industrial sectors, and move it from a relationship based solely on supply and demand, to an integrated relationship based on joint work to build the future.”

He pointed to the need to build an effective partnership between the most energy-consuming industries, the largest energy producers, technology companies, financial institutions, governments and civil society.

Energy prices

“With the continued growth of the world’s population and the development of economies, we will need levels of sustainable energy that are in line with this growth, and at affordable prices,” Al-Jaber said.

He pointed out that policy makers, industry leaders, and innovators must work together under one umbrella to achieve a quantum leap in climate action, reduce emissions, and ensure that world economies keep pace with the future.

Speaking during the meeting, Al-Jaber referred to the recently released sixth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which included a call for significant, rapid and sustainable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in all sectors.

“The latest IPCC report clearly indicates that expanding carbon capture to reduce emissions from emitting-intensive sectors is a must if we are to achieve carbon neutrality, in addition to the adoption and application of other clean energy sources and technologies,” he said.

He explained that the UAE Climate Technology Forum aims to harness the power of technology to transform one of the biggest challenges the world is facing today into one of the biggest opportunities to achieve sustainable economic and social development.

He pointed out that the Paris Agreement succeeded in uniting governments on what the world must do in facing the climate challenge, and that the task of the COP28 climate summit will be to focus on “how” implementation, practical application and tangible progress.

He explained that the Climate Summit COP 28 will focus on practical measures, realistic outputs, finding solutions, making a positive impact and including everyone.

He said: “The climate crisis represents a challenge that no sector can face alone. Therefore, we need to combine our efforts to reduce emissions in conjunction with increasing reliance on carbon-free energy sources, and through constructive cooperation and qualitative partnerships, we will be able to implement a new model of economic development that depends on to end emissions, while breathing new life into economic growth.”
